The JL campaign won 'Campaign of the year' today, just goes to show what the right song and a bit of festive sweetness can do for a fairly pedestrian idea.

It’s interesting to evaluate how much of an impact JLP’s trusted nature has on the overall audience perception of this ad.

The first line of the soundtrack taps into exactly what we want to hear as a recession-hit country and JLP recently announced that they are struggling too – profits are down considerably for the last six-months. The impact of this campaign on their bottom line will make for interesting reading when they release their Christmas sales figures in the new year.

I wonder how much of JLP's loved/trusted status - and the overwhelmingly positive reception their ad has received - stems from the fact that the business is run on a social enterprise model. Some might find the ad a bit saccharin (I personally don't agree), but it's backed by a very important truth that really differentiates John Lewis from their competitors: they are owned by their employees. They have 'sharing' quite literally at the heart of their organisation. You can't fake that. In today's climate particularly, with consumerism and corporate capitalism somewhat under the microscope, this could give John Lewis a useful edge in a tough trading environment.

JL habitually tops the most loved/trusted retailers - and it is this that gives them the permission to narrate this (slightly saccharin) festive story, and as a pillar of this trust, their consistent quality that means it works.

Lovely, subtle in that it's appearing to not condone greed, and another beautiful soundtrack that keeps it echoing emotionally.
